The Work

Catalogue note

Black diamonds occupy a rare and formidable place within the mineral world, defined by their absence of cleavage planes and their complex, irregular internal structure. Resistant to traditional cutting techniques, they yield only to the most advanced high-energy laser technologies, allowing form to be revealed through precision rather than force.

The Black Falcon represents the culmination of this technological and artistic frontier. Prior to its transformation, Peter Herbosch undertook an extensive program of study, producing synthetic models of the original rough to refine laser angles and thermal thresholds with absolute accuracy. In collaboration with his brother Johan, he developed proprietary software to direct custom-built laser systems, ensuring an unprecedented level of control over a material long considered unworkable at this scale.

Equally pioneering was the finishing process. Together with engineer Tom van Remortel, Herbosch designed a dedicated polishing system to meet the unique demands of the stone. The final surface was executed by master polisher Walter Verveckken, achieving a rare equilibrium between raw intensity and refined luminosity. The complete evolution of the diamond, from its natural state to its final sculptural form, unfolded over seven years of continuous innovation and craftsmanship.

The form itself was not imposed but discovered. The rough stone already suggested the powerful silhouette of a bird of prey, and from this inherent character emerged the falcon, a symbol historically associated with sovereignty, strength, and vision. In The Black Falcon, these qualities are rendered in a material that is both ancient and unyielding, resulting in a work that transcends conventional categorisation. It is at once a gemstone of exceptional magnitude and a singular work of sculpture.

Peter Herbosch, born in 1958, is widely regarded as one of the foremost innovators in contemporary diamond cutting. Trained within the De Beers system, he mastered traditional techniques before pioneering the integration of laser technology into the field. His independently developed machines are now employed internationally, reshaping modern diamond processing.

Honoured as a Knight of the Order of the Crown for his contributions to the Belgian diamond industry, Herbosch continues to work in Antwerp, the historic centre of the global diamond trade. Through his vision and technical mastery, The Black Falcon stands as a rare convergence of nature, engineering, and artistic expression, a piece of profound presence and enduring significance.
