Catalogue note
Barnett Newman faced significant financial hardship, particularly during the 1940s and 1950s. Unable to afford traditional artist materials, he often purchased remnants of cotton or canvas from local fabric shops that supplied clothing makers. He would then construct his own stretchers and stretch the fabric himself. This resourceful approach is visible in his work: the weave of the material remains apparent, and in some areas the paint seeps through the surface, revealing the modest origins of his supports.
Barnett Newman was one of the most important artist of 20th Century and his oil paintings are
very rare to find,as most of them are in Museums and many Private collections.
They only come up at auctions every 4-5years almost as difficult to find as Da Vinci artworks.
