The Work

Catalogue note

Guardian of the Infinite Spectrum. Where the Al Khamsa carvings follow a lineage, the Royal Chameleon follows the stone, the artisan has left the host rock almost entirely intact and drawn the creature out of the seam of green that runs through it.

The piece turns on a single quality: the emerald and its calcite matrix meet in a band of colour that shifts from ochre through gold to a saturated Boyacá green, so that the animal appears to change colour as the light moves across it.

It is the least worked object in the collection and, for some collectors, the most persuasive, the evidence of natural formation is left visible rather than polished away.
